A short history, some facts and a Q&A session

A Brief History

This is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations. It is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, initially probably for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a purely physical basis. However, it is said, the practice reached the modern world via the native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona. Ear candles were used traditionally by Shaman healers. Ancient wall paintings show their importance in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies of the tribe. These candles are still made today on the basis of the old traditional formula.

The magic of fire has fascinated people from the very beginning of time and Ear candles evoke a similar fascination having been used by many cultures since ancient times. The peoples of the Siberian prairies, Asia and native North and South American Indians mention Ear candles in their myths, with ancient rock paintings showing Ear candles being used at initiation rituals and medicinal ceremonies.

How do they work?

The healing properties of the Hopi Ear Candle has its foundation in two primary physical actions. Firstly, the slight under pressure (the chimney effect) inside the Ear Candle and the vibration of the rising air column serve to gently massage the ear drum and promote secretion in the frontal and par nasal sinuses. This has an immediate subjective effect of regulating ear pressure. Users often describe a soothing, light sensation in the ear/head area. Secondly, the locally applied warmth stimulates vascularisation, invigorates the immune system and reinforces the flow of lymph. At the same time, important acupuncture points and reflex zones are stimulated.

Secretion flow is gently stimulated and the vapour collects and removes impurities or deposits. Most of these are carried away through the candle "chimney", although some of them can be found in the condensed candle wax residue after removal from the ear, or could even work their way up to the surface 24-48 hours after.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are Ear Candles?

A: Ear Candles are long hollow candles made of fabric and wax.

Q: What is the process that allows Ear Candles to work?

A: The base of an Ear Candle is gently inserted a fraction of an inch into the outer ear canal and then the tip of the Ear Candle is lit. The flame creates a vacuum which can gently and naturally pull the wax, moisture and other residues out of the ear and into the Ear Candle. Sometimes a facial massage is combined with the process to help clear the facial passages.

Q: Is the process painful?

A: No, not for most people. In fact, some people find the process to be so relaxing that they fall asleep during the candling.

Q: Why should I have my ears candled?

A: Ear Candling can be very useful any time wax or moisture in the ear is a problem.

Q: What kind of results can I expect?

A: Results vary with the individual. Most people have a much greater problem with wax and moisture in their ears than they realize. Wax and moisture can also affect the functioning of the inner ear, which is critical to our sense of balance.

Q: How can I tell if my ears need to be candled?

A: If you have experienced a gradual reduction in hearing sensitivity, this may be due in part to wax build-up. Itching in the ears and plugged ears are also symptoms that can often be relieved by ear candling.

Q: In what other ways can Ear Candling be beneficial?

A: Ear Candling has also been known to relieve symptoms associated with swimmer’s ear, allergies and sinus problems.

Q: Are there other signs that I need to have my ears candled?

A: Yes. Many people who experience discomfort in their ears when flying in an airplane or at a high altitude find that ear candling can help to relieve their symptoms. Scuba divers also find the process very useful.

Q: How often should I have my ears candled?

A: You need to use your own judgment as to what feels normal in your ear once it is cleared out, and how often your ears will benefit from being candled.

Q: Does Ear Candling cure any diseases?

A: No claims can be made that Ear Candling cures any specific diseases. It is recommended that you follow the advice of your doctor concerning any specific health challenges. Ear Candling is not a cure-all. It has been very useful in many cases, but not all ear problems are associated with the build up of moisture and wax in the ears.

Q: What is the residue that is found in the Ear Candle after the process is completed?

A: The residue found in the Ear Candle is a mixture of candle residue and ear residue. The percentage of each varies from individual to individual and candle to candle. Even the conditions of the room can affect how much residue is found in the candle, drafts can cause the Ear Candle to excrete more wax.

Q: How long does the process take?

A: Each Ear Candle burns for about 10 to 15 minutes.
